How to Clean My Air Conditioner

By Kyle Rafter - August 11, 2025

Routine cleaning is essential to maximise the lifespan and efficiency of your air conditioning system. Dust, pollen and other particles can accumulate in filters, vents and outside units over time, putting strain on your system and compromising indoor air quality. Maintaining an air conditioner can lead to fresh, healthy air flowing throughout your home and it also helps improve airflow and energy consumption.

This guide will walk you through how to clean your indoor and outdoor unit, as well as suggestions to maintain the condition of your ducted system. If you follow a few easy steps your Fujitsu air conditioner will provide ongoing comfort for years to come.

How to Clean a Split System Air Conditioner

Indoor Unit

  1. Power Off the Unit
Begin by turning off the air conditioner using the remote control. For added safety, switch off the power at the circuit breaker to prevent any electrical hazards.

  2. Open the Front Panel
Gently lift the front panel of the indoor unit until it clicks into place. This will expose the air filters inside the unit.

  3. Remove the Air Filters
Carefully slide out the air filters. They are typically located at the top of the unit and can be removed by pulling them upwards and outwards.

  4. Clean the Filters
Use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment to remove dust and debris from the filters. For a more thorough clean, rinse the filters under lukewarm water. If they are particularly dirty, a mild detergent can be used. Ensure the filters are completely dry before reinstalling them to prevent mould growth.

  5. Reassemble the Unit
Once all components are clean and dry, reinsert the air filters into their original positions. Lower the front panel back into place until it clicks securely.

  6. Clean the Exterior Casing
Wipe down the exterior of the unit with a damp cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials, as these can damage the finish of the unit.

If you’re unsure about doing this yourself, you can watch our instructional video for guidance on cleaning a wall mounted split system unit.

For those with a multi-system R32 air conditioner, it's crucial to repeat this process for every connected indoor unit. Cleaning your system every one to three months, especially before summer and winter, helps extend its lifespan and keeps the air in your home or workspace fresh and healthy.

Or, if you’d rather leave it to a professional, you can always book a seasonal service with a Fujitsu Service Agent for expert care.

Outdoor Unit

The condition of your outdoor unit will directly affect how well it runs. Outside it's constantly exposed to weather and natural debris. Leaves, dirt and even litter can pile up and interfere with proper airflow. When airflow is restricted, the system must work harder, lowering its overall efficiency. Regular cleaning of the outdoor air conditioning unit helps to maximise heating and cooling output.

For a basic clean, first turn off the power at your main electrical panel before you start any cleaning. Clear any obvious rubbish from around the unit and cut back any invading branches or plants. Lightly sweep dirt from the outside grille with a soft brush.

Ducted Air Conditioning Cleaning

Maintaining good indoor air quality and guaranteeing effective operation of your ducted air conditioning system depends on keeping your ducted air conditioning system clean. Although an expert is better equipped to clean the internal parts of a ducted system, such as the central unit and ductwork, you can and should routinely clean the vents or grilles inside your house to prevent dust buildup and keep air flowing.

Start by turning off your ducted air conditioning system to ensure safety. Carefully remove the vent covers — most can be gently pulled down or unscrewed, depending on the design. Be sure to clean the air filters located in the return air grille, as these play a crucial role in maintaining airflow and efficiency. To do this, open the hinged return air grille, slide the filter out, and clean it with a vacuum or with warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and allow the filter to air dry completely before placing it back and closing the grille. Use a vacuum with a brush attachment to remove dust from the vent covers and surrounding areas. If the covers are particularly dirty, wash them with warm, soapy water, rinse well and let them fully dry before reinstalling. For ceiling vents, an extendable duster or microfiber cloth works well to gently wipe away surface dust without needing to remove the covers.

This basic air conditioner cleaning action will greatly increase the efficiency of your ducted air system, increase airflow and the effectiveness and lifespan of your air filters. Booking a professional service every 1–2 years is advised for a deeper clean, including inside the ducts and filters, especially if you notice reduced airflow, musty smells or worsening allergy symptoms.
