There is Water Dripping From My Air Conditioner: What Should I Do?

By Kyle Rafter - August 25, 2025

If you’ve noticed water dripping from your air conditioner, it’s a clear sign something’s wrong. Any water leaking inside means there’s an issue that needs attention. Ignoring it can lead to mould growth, damage to your home, and even a complete system failure. Here’s what to check if your split system air conditioner is dripping water inside—and how to fix the problem so it runs efficiently again. Here are some things to look for if your split system air conditioner is dripping water inside and what you can do to make it run more efficiently.

Why is My Air Conditioner Dripping Water?

In most cases, water dripping from an AC unit is simply due to condensation.

However, clogged return air filters are another leading cause. You should check to see if your return air filters are clean and if they aren't, you should remove and clean before re-installing them. This simple maintenance step can help prevent several issues and improve overall performance.

Another possible culprit is a blocked or disconnected drain line. This can stop condensation from draining away as it should, causing water to leak from the front or bottom of the unit. If you think this may be the case, you should get your unit looked at by a professional to avoid further internal damage.

You will also find that the outdoor unit will drip water when using the air conditioner in heating mode, which is completely normal from the outdoor unit coil condensation. If this is what you're seeing, read more in our FAQ about water dripping from outdoor air conditioner.

It’s also worth noting that drain plug kits are provided for the outdoor units in the box when new and should be used at the time of installation if there is a chance of water dripping onto an area that needs to stay dry. This applies to external units, not indoor ones.

Is Water Dripping From My AC Dangerous?

Aside from potential internal damage to the unit, if the dripping from your indoor unit isn't stopped, it could cause damage to nearby walls, paintwork or flooring. It might not be immediately dangerous to your home or your health right away, but fixing the problem at its source early will help you avoid repairs and save you money.

If your system is an older model, it’s also worth considering how age and wear might be affecting performance. You can learn more about this in our blog covering how long do air conditioners last and more.
